Abstract

After attempting to make a film in Hollywood, Sergei Eisenstein meets Robert Flaherty, who convinces him to travel to Mexico and make a film there. However, the shooting turns out to be catastrophic and Que viva México! will remain unfinished. This article argues that Eisenstein’s brief encounter with Flaherty was highly influential for him and, based on the Mexican film experience, it analyzes the connections —which initially might seem improbable— between these two filmmakers.
