This article analyzes the feelings of hopelessness and helplessness experienced by professionals in municipal basic education in Presidente Prudente-SP, within the context of educational policies and working conditions. The qualitative research followed the epistemological framework of (Auto)biographical Research and was conducted through narrative interviews with professionals working in different public positions. The analysis reveals feelings of helplessness and hopelessness in relation to the following thematic units: bureaucratization and fragmentation of work; conformism; avoidance of professional practice; weakening of continuing education; exposure to and discrimination based on gender; lack of appreciation for historical career achievements and successful experiences. It concludes that these feelings, although invisible in the face of the challenges imposed by the alienation and dehumanization of current neoliberal ways of conceiving educational work, are essential for critical reflection in the design of educational policies and, consequently, for improving the objective conditions for valuing professionals in public basic education.
