The article examines the reconfiguration of the São Paulo public school system under the imposition of a technical rationality that prioritizes control and performativity at the expense of education's emancipatory potential. Drawing on the perspectives of Foucault and Freire, it reveals how the emphasis on technological innovation transforms teachers into mere operators of digital platforms and students into subjects subjected to standardized routines, producing docile bodies and silencing critical voices. Recent educational policies, grounded in quantitative metrics, homogenized curricula, and uncritical gamification, exacerbate inequalities by disregarding sociocultural diversities and suppressing genuine pedagogical dialogue. By mandating the uncontrolled use of digital tools, these policies strip teachers of their autonomy and undermine students' critical thinking. In this approach, reading is understood as a social, ethical, and political practice capable of restoring the teacher's role as a critical mediator and the student's ability to collectively construct meanings. Thus, technology ceases to be an instrument of surveillance and becomes an ally when mediated with pedagogical intentionality, fostering autonomy, reflection, and resistance. The text ultimately reaffirms education as a humanizing experience committed to social justice, integral formation, and the critical reading of the world, in opposition to control mechanisms that threaten pedagogical freedom.
