This article analyzes challenges, obstacles and purposes in the formation of the literary reader in the context of Early Childhood Education, from the perspective of teachers who work with this age group. This is a qualitative, descriptive-analytical study conducted in a Municipal Early Childhood Education School in the city of São Paulo. Four Early Childhood Education teachers participated in the study. Data were collected through questionnaires used to characterize the participants and through semi-structured interviews, which were subsequently analyzed in light of the adopted theoretical framework. We found that the interviewees overcame obstacles related to the collection and its access, however, there are still challenges to overcome, such as arousing the interest of all teachers in continuing education on the subject, the number of children per class and making literary reading activities more attractive.
