Abstract

This article is an excerpt from a Master's thesis, which aimed to propose strategies for implementing geocaching as a geoeducational tool to promote the appreciation of the landscape heritage of the Quarta Colônia UNESCO Global Geopark. The Geopark covers a territorial extension of 2,923 km², located in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul. Geocaching as a geoeducational tool can be a valuable tool in engaging visitors in a practical and exploratory learning experience that deepens their understanding of the natural world. To achieve this purpose, a strategic plan was developed to analyze the landscape heritage of the Geopark in order to identify which part of this heritage would be selected to support the implementation of new caches. Thus, ten points were selected for the creation of geocaches. The selection criteria took into account the heritage value, the potential for cache creation, and the representativeness of the heritage presented by the Geopark. As a result, Geocaching was revitalized and expanded in the Quarta Colônia Geopark, establishing itself as a potential geoeducational tool to be used in the territory. This revitalization and expansion occurred mainly through the creation of 10 new caches and extensive maintenance on the 11 previously existing caches.
