Abstract

This paper aims to present a commented translation of the short story El pájaro de la verdad by Fernán Caballero, the pseudonym of Cecilia Böhl de Faber (1796, Switzerland – 1877, Seville), with the purpose of offering the Brazilian reader a fluid version that is consistent with the spirit of the work, while respecting its alterity and symbolic depth. The research is grounded in the illusionist theory of Jiří Levý (2011), according to which literary translation should recreate in the target-language reader an aesthetic experience similar to that experienced by the reader of the original text. The short story, which belongs to the collection Cuentos, adivinanzas y refranes populares (1921 edition), features characteristics of the Spanish popular narrative tradition, marked by syntactic structures and stylistic devices that evoke the nineteenth-century oral tradition and cultural imaginary. The analysis focuses on aspects such as lexical preservation, syntactic order, and the maintenance of stylistic, emotional, and religious elements present in the narrative, seeking to preserve the traditional atmosphere of the original text in the translation.
