Abstract

This article addresses the controversies raised by the release of the series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power – released on the Amazon Prime Video streaming service in 2022 – as an adaptation of the Appendices of the literary work The Lord of the Rings, by J. R. R. Tolkien. The criticism was mainly motivated by the representation of female roles in the work and the presence of Black characters, which, according to some fans, would not be consistent with the original material. To this end, we present key concepts related to film production and its semiotic aspects. In addition, we introduce the concept of narrative and summarize both the original plot and the analyzed series. Next, we discuss the adaptation process, its particularities and characteristics, and then contextualize the controversial aspects, demonstrating the naturalness of such transformations and the inconsistency of the numerous criticisms, which, in our view, reflect a resistance to social changes.
