Abstract

This paper aims at discussing the São Francisco River transposition project, in order to see it as part of a more global development project for the Northeastern semi-arid region. This is a region that has lived in an economic stagnation since the 1960s, and keeps unchanged archaic structures inherited from the colonial period. Therefore, the permanent water availability is crucial when thinking out economic alternatives to the semi-arid region. In this case, transposition is necessary to supply water to urban areas that already make up more than half of the regional population, and also for the urban and rural development projects.
