The article examines biodiversity loss in the Legal Amazon, with emphasis on the state of Mato Grosso, analyzing how ecological processes and territorial dynamics intersect in the production of socio-environmental vulnerabilities. The research problem focuses on understanding how “drivers of loss” — both direct and indirect — manifest in a territory marked by agricultural expansion, land conflicts, and institutional weaknesses in environmental governance. The objective of the study is to assess how habitat fragmentation, the disruption of ecological and hydrological connectivity, and pressures on Indigenous lands and protected areas converge to intensify biodiversity loss at a regional scale. The theoretical framework draws on authors from landscape ecology, conservation biology, and socio-environmental studies, articulating concepts such as biodiversity, ecological connectivity, fragmentation, and biocultural diversity. The methodology integrates bibliographic review, document analysis, and official indicators, enabling a multiscalar interpretation of degradation processes. The findings indicate that Mato Grosso represents a critical frontier of biodiversity loss, where accelerated deforestation, wildfires, commodity expansion, water contamination, and pressures on Indigenous territories form an integrated system of degradation. The study shows that the environmental crisis arises not only from ecological factors, but from political decisions that subordinate conservation to intensive production models, undermining connectivity and regional socioecological resilience.
