The Matas de Minas Indication of Origin (IO) is a type of Geographic Indication (GI) that aims to differentiate specialty coffees produced in the Matas de Minas Region - Minas Gerais, Brazil. Our study aimed to analyze whether the IP recognition process contributes to rural development in the region. To this, a descriptive and exploratory case study was carried out, using Social Network Analysis (SNA) combined with interview, document and literature review analysis. As a result, it was observed that the GI recognition process is capable of structuring a social network that can strengthen the territory. Therefore, in addition to differentiating coffee, which adds market value, IP was able to promote socioeconomic and productive organization when recognized based on existing local assumptions, such as associations and cooperatives, and the fight against market opportunism. Furthermore, it was found that the process of recognizing this distinctive sign of origin, also known as an intellectual property tool, depended on the participation of producers, local society and the public and private sectors to promote rural development in the region.
