Abstract

In this study, we identified the relationship between the structure of the network of relationships with support institutions and the performance of tourist destinations. We analyzed six Brazilian leading destinations that exhibit different performances and conducted 108 interviews. The data were processed using Social Network Analysis. We concluded that there is a relationship between the structure of the network of relationships among support institutions and the performance of tourist destinations. As a theoretical contribution, we propose that (i) destination performance and the number of institutions in the group with the most central roles in the network of relationships are positively associated; (ii) destination performance and the number of relationships of public, municipal institutions, and council members are positively associated; (iii) destination performance and the concentration of the intermediation function in the key intermediaries of the network of relationships are negatively associated; (iv) destination performance and the number of institutions performing the intermediation function in the network of relationships are positively associated; and (v) destination performance and the cohesion of the network of relationships are positively associated.
