Abstract

Justification and Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the presence and resistance of Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative Staphylococci resistant to oxacillin isolated in surfaces and blood cultures in an Intensive Care Unit of an emergency hospital in the city of Caruaru, Pernambuco, Brazil. Methods: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study, the collections being performed from the bed surfaces of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). In parallel, blood samples from the respective patients were also obtained. Samples were collected by convenience sampling and the identification of the isolated microorganisms was done by mass spectrometry. Results: We observed a higher prevalence of bacteria from the group of coagulasenegative Staphylococci - CoNS (76.92%) in relation to the species Staphylococcus aureus (23.07%). Among the microorganisms identified as resistant to oxacillin, 12.5% of the species were similar in the bed surface samples and blood cultures from the same patient sample. Conclusions: Resistant bacteria identified reinforce the importance of emphasizing the general measures of environmental hygiene in relation to patient safety in health care.
