This study addresses the theme of affections in José Saramago's novel The Cave. Drawing on the theories of Aristotle, Vygotsky, and Maturana, it proposes reflections on topics such as catharsis, the relationship between art and emotions, and the role of emotions in human life, all while focusing on the interpretation of the fictional text. The analysis highlights the strong affectivity that runs through Saramago's narrative, identifying significant moments where affections drive the characters' actions. Furthermore, it argues that affections shape the trajectory and resolution of the narrative, and that the author's ethical-aesthetic stance prioritizes loving relationships.
