In this paper, we analyze the Brazilian Portuguese adverb “literally” from Sweetser’s (1990) perspective of Cognitive Semantics. The analysis is preceded by a definition of the adverbial class and a presentation of Sweetser’s main concepts. Finally, the adverb “literally” is analyzed over some of its appearances in the vernaculum, including uses found in the internet. Then we extend the analysis to the correspondente German adverb, buchstäblich, aiming to corroborate the applicability of cognitive models to semantics changes.Downloads
