This work intends to discuss the role of metonymy in the interpretation of suffixed neological lexical units. The data are neological adjectives and verbs extracted from Brazilian written press, which are classified in relation to the metonymical patterns present in their meaning. Metonymy is analysed as a process which relates linguistic meaning to the speaker’s extralinguistic knowledge. The data here presented corroborate other studies on the same subject, specially Basilio (2007, 2011).Downloads
