I developed this essay after several cycles of the workshop Long sentences don’t knead bread: creative writing of culinary recipes, offered since 2022 and based on the concept of recipes as a writing device. The workshop explores the culinary world across diverse literary genres, aiming to produce creative texts. Furthermore, it draws connections between gender issues, narratives of the self and culinary vocabulary. Most workshop participants are women. With this is mind and having observed a literary affinity between women and onions, I designed activities to address this theme based on an established repertoire. Over the years, however, I have encountered other texts, in both prose and poetry, that reinforce these connections. This is why I developed this essay. Two main characteristics link woman and onions: their layers and their ability to make people cry. These aspects are explored here through a creative writing exercise, which is why the essay genre was chosen: as it allows for fluidity in writing.
