Cartography of argumentation studies in Minas Gerais: theoretical affiliations and interfaces

Abstract

This article presents partial results from the Cartography of Argumentation Studies in the Southeast Region of Brazil (2011-2020), particularly in Minas Gerais. It draws on the significant growth of argumentation studies in Brazil over the last two decades, a movement that revives the traditions inaugurated by Perelman & Olbrechts-Tyteca (New Rhetoric), Toulmin (argumentative model), and Anscombre & Ducrot (Argumentation within Language). The article’s main objective is to map the predominant theoretical perspectives, the established theoretical interfaces, and the analytical categories in theses and dissertations from Graduate Programs in Linguistics and Literary Studies in Minas Gerais during this period. The survey conducted systematic searches in the Capes Theses and Dissertations Database, Sucupira Platform, and institutional repositories, resulting, after methodological refinement, in 119 studies that effectively adopt the theory of argumentation as their central framework. Data analysis shows that the field of argumentation studies in Minas Gerais constitutes a "realm of memory" (lieu de mémoire) (Nora, 1993), marked by the consolidation of a discursive-argumentative tradition, institutionally anchored in research groups and academic supervision networks. The presence of other theoretical perspectives, though minority, points to the heterogeneity of the discursive space and to possible lines of flight (Deleuze & Guattari, 1995). 43 studies were excluded since they mobilized argumentation in an unsystematic way, paradoxically revealing the strength of this notion as a cross-cutting analytical category in Language Studies. We conclude that this cartography is a provisional and open record of the field’s memory, to support future research and curricular interventions.
