Mapping argumentation research in Southeastern Brazil: Minas Gerais and UFMG in perspective (2011-2020)

Abstract

This paper aims to describe and evaluate the data from the project "Cartographies of Argumentation in the Southeast", focusing on research on argumentation developed in Minas Gerais and, particularly, at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), from 2011 to 2020. The research adopts a quantitative and qualitative methodology, based on the survey of dissertation and thesis records in Postgraduate Programs in Letters and Linguistics, from databases such as the CAPES Thesis and Dissertation Catalog, digital libraries, and institutional repositories. The data were collected using keywords related to argumentation and organized in spreadsheets that distinguish research on argumentation analysis (AA) and argumentation teaching (EA), allowing the description of theoretical trends, discursive fields, and objects of study. The results reveal a significant predominance of research focused on argumentation analysis in relation to teaching, a trend observed in the Southeast (74%), in Minas Gerais (78%), and at UFMG (77%). The centrality of the discourse argumentation perspective is also highlighted, as well as the recurrence of studies on journalistic, legal, and literary discourse. It is concluded that argumentation studies in the Southeast region of Brazil, particularly in Minas Gerais and at UFMG (Federal University of Minas Gerais), show a concentration on analytical approaches and specific discursive domains, highlighting the need to broaden investigations focused on the teaching of argumentation and diversify the objects of study, contributing to a broader and more balanced panorama of research in the area.
