Linguistic-Cognitive Training Program for Typical Older Adults: Development and User Profile

Abstract

Population aging poses significant challenges for mental health promotion within public policy, especially in developing countries. This article presents the development and implementation of a cognitive training program based on language tasks, designed for literate older adults, along with a profile of its users. The aim is to describe the methodological construction process of the program, the inclusion criteria, participant profiles, and outcomes related to adherence, participation, and perceptions of the intervention. The intervention took place over 12 weeks and included in-person sessions and take-home activities. Forty-three women aged between 60 and 85 participated in the study, recruited through social media and messaging groups. A subgroup also underwent functional neuroimaging assessments. Participants completed sociodemographic, well-being, and reading habits questionnaires, as well as a battery of cognitive tests. The results revealed high adherence, good acceptance of the proposed activities, and positive feedback regarding subjective memory, attention, and motivation. While participants showed homogeneous levels of formal education, their reading and writing habits varied considerably. The program demonstrated methodological feasibility and high participant engagement, reinforcing the potential of linguistic-cognitive training as a tool for mental health promotion and cognitive enhancement, in addition to fostering social interaction.
