The female subversion expressed in Rita Lee’s autobiographies

Abstract

Rita Lee (1947-2023) became part of the history of Brazilian music, being known as the Queen of Rock. Fighting for the conquest of its space in this medium that, until then, was predominantly male, the singer and composer, who although not declared feminist, opened ways for other women could also build their trajectory in national rock. In addition to being the author of lyrics loaded with ideals of female liberation, which question gender stereotypes and confront moral standards, she also expressed her resistance to women’s subordination in her two autobiographies, Rita Lee: an autobiography (2016) and Rita Lee: another autobiography (2023). From these two self-narratives, this work aims to understand how the singer has been subversive in the exercise of different gender roles and how this reflects in her writing. For this, a bibliographical research was carried out, based on the contributions of authors such as Lígia Maria Leite Pereira (2000), Sandra Maia Farias Vasconcelos and Maria Neurielli Figueiredo Cardoso (2009), who address the autobiography genre; and in the tangent to the feminine issues, We take as basis the reflections of Elaine Showalter (1994), Elódia Xavier (2021), Joan Scott (2016), Joan Tronto (1997), Simone de Beauvoir (1970) and Teresa de Lauretis (1994). The study showed that Rita Lee’s writing not only challenges institutional and social norms, but also works as agender technology, enabling reflections on female emancipation.
