Beyond the Commercial Transaction: An Analysis of Economic Transactions in Agroecology through the Lens of Frame Semantics

This study is part of a broader project that aims at developing digital resources for the field of Agroecology, grounded in the descriptive possibilities offered by Frame Semantics. In this paper the general objective is to analyze the Economic Transactions frame within the context of Agroecology. This analysis is motivated by the fact that the diverse economic relations established in Agroecology cannot be satisfactorily described solely through the traditional Commercial Transaction frame. To carry out the analysis, we built a corpus to represent the Economic Transactions frame specific to Agroecology. Lexical units related to participants and economic practices were identified and classified into subframes and examined according to the particularities of Economic Transactions in Agroecology. Our results indicate that the traditional Commercial Transaction frame alone is insufficient to account for economic practices in agroecological contexts, given the specific production and commercialization arrangements, the perspectivization and roles performed by frame elements, and the economic practices mediated by values fundamental to Agroecology.
