Police cases and encapsulation: an analysis of metonymic referential expressions

Abstract

Based on the notion of encapsulation of a cognitive-discursive nature defended by Lima (2013), Sousa and Lima (2015) and Sousa (2021), the objective of this work is to analyze the encapsulating function of the nominal expressions “Pesseghini Case”, “Eliza Samudio Case”, “Eloá Pimentel Case” and "Elize Matsunaga Case”, which designate four of the police cases reported in the Brazilian media, describing their semantic-cognitive basis of a metonymic nature. For this, we support ourselves in theoretical reflections arising from an interface between Textual Linguistics and Cognitive Linguistics. In the first, we draw on the notions of encapsulation (Conte, 2003; Francis, 2003; Lima, 2013; Sousa; Lima, 2015, Sousa, 2021), and in the second, we consider Idealized Cognitive Models (Lakoff, 1987). Our analyses lead us to elucidate the ways in which the interlocutor can (re)construct the semantic associations established in the text and the relationships between referents.
