Abstract

Introduction: pneumonia is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. It is an infectious disease that affects the respiratory system. Objective: to identify, through the literature, the risk factors for the development of pneumonia in the elderly, both acquired in the community and in long-term care facilities. Method: integrative review prepared based on research in the PubMed, Scielo and Scidirect databases. Results: studies of both elderly profiles mention dysphagia, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, as well as other chronic diseases such as diabetes and dementia. The main differences are related to the environment and, consequently, to the context of exposure of these profiles. Conclusion: the various risk factors related to pneumonia reveal that it is essential for health professionals to recognize and seek prevention and management measures.
